Commercial Pressure Washer Winterization & Freeze Repair, Lewisberry PA
Central PA usually sees its first hard freeze in mid-to-late October, and a cracked pump manifold or split coil is the single most preventable repair bill we write every year. We winterize every brand and repair what already froze, for shops across York, Harrisburg, Lancaster and Lebanon.
What freezes, and why
Water expands as it turns to ice and splits whatever is holding it. These five points take the damage, in roughly the order we see them on the bench.
Pump manifold
Water trapped in the head has nowhere to go when it expands. A hairline crack there means the pump comes off the machine before it runs again.
Unloader
The unloader holds a column of water between the seat and the piston. That water freezes first because it sits still, and a cracked unloader housing is usually the first thing we find on a bench in November.
Coil
Hot water units keep water in the coil between uses. A frozen wrap can split without leaking a drop until the machine is back under pressure — which is why we pressure test the coil rather than just eyeball it.
Hose reel & fittings
Standing water in the swivel and the first few feet of hose freezes fast because it is exposed to the air. Cracked swivels and split hose ends are the cheapest item on this list and the most common.
Float tank & inlet
A float tank left full over a hard freeze can crack the tank itself or split the inlet fitting, and it is often not noticed until the next startup floods the pad.
Winterize it yourself — the checklist
This is what we do on a drop-off, in order. The machine is yours whether you bring it here or not.
- Shut down and disconnect the water supplyDo this before the first hard freeze, not after a cold snap has already caught the machine full.
- Drain what gravity will takePump, hoses, gun and reel — open every low point you can reach and let it run out before you reach for antifreeze.
- Run antifreeze through the pumpRV/marine propylene glycol antifreeze pulled through the inlet and out the gun protects the pump and unloader, not just the visible hose. Run it until it comes out pink at the nozzle.
- Drain the coil separately, on hot water unitsA pass-through at the pump does not reliably clear the coil. Open the coil's low point on its own and confirm it runs dry — this is the step most DIY winterizing skips, and the coil is the expensive part.
- Store burner fuel properlyDiesel gels and gathers water in a tank that sits all winter. Drain it or treat it, and do not leave a partial tank to gum up a spring startup.
Drop it at our shop
Bring it to 665 Laura Ct, Lewisberry, and we run the full list above — including the coil drain-down most owners skip.
All brands, not just the ones we sell. Most units turn in days, and if the visit turns up a worn unloader or injector while it is already apart, we tell you before we replace it — same as any repair.
Already froze? Freeze-damage repair
If the first hard freeze got there before the checklist did.
Pump rebuilds in-house for General Pump, Cat, AR and Comet — packings, valves and seals, not a factory turnaround you wait weeks on. On hot water units we pressure test the coil to find a freeze split before it fails under a customer's job, rather than after. You get a number before any work starts, the same as every repair that comes through the door.
The five places that crack, and the order we see them, are written up in full in 5 things that crack on a hot water unit when it freezes.
Questions we get every fall
How do I winterize a hot water pressure washer myself?
Shut off the water supply, drain the pump, hoses, gun and reel by gravity, then run RV/marine (propylene glycol) antifreeze through the pump until it runs pink at the nozzle. On hot water units, drain the coil separately at its own low point — a pump pass-through alone will not clear it — and drain or treat the burner fuel rather than leaving a partial tank sitting all winter.
What actually cracks when a pressure washer freezes?
Water expands roughly 9% as it turns to ice, and it splits whatever is holding it. On these machines that is usually the pump manifold, the unloader, the coil on hot water units, the hose reel swivel, or a full float tank and its inlet fitting — the same five points listed above, in roughly that order of how often we see them.
Is compressed air enough, or do I need antifreeze?
Compressed air can push out the water that is free to move, but it will not reliably displace what sits in a coil wrap or an unloader's internal passages. An antifreeze pass-through protects those spots the way compressed air alone does not — that is the difference between the two methods.
Do you winterize machines you didn't sell us?
Yes, every brand — the same policy as our repair bay. Drop it off in Lewisberry and we run the full checklist, not just the parts that are easy to reach.
How long does drop-off winterization take?
Most units turn in days, not weeks, because we stock the wear parts a winterization visit tends to turn up — unloaders and injector kits mostly. Call ahead and we can usually tell you what to expect before you make the drive.
My pump already cracked from a freeze — now what?
We rebuild pumps in-house for General Pump, Cat, AR and Comet, and we pressure test the coil on hot water units to find a split before it fails on a customer's job rather than after. You get a number before any work starts, same as every repair that comes across our bench.
